women of distinction #1: Cambria Wu

October 19, 2010

As promised, I'm posting the women of distinction that I wrote about last week in the South Bay.

First up? Cambria Wu. Teacher, coach and the woman behind a group of students finding new life in the inner city.

"In our school setting, and our community, it's just really hard to convince kids to participate in school stuff," said Wu, of Torrance. "We don't really have any kind of school records, because urban schools have such a high turnover rate."

Many of Wu's students had never been outside the local neighborhood until she took them for runs on beaches and tracks in other parts of the city. Wu recalls that on one such trip, to Griffith Park, a student said she had never before seen downtown Los Angeles.
