Bridget

August 9, 2010

Bridget is almost singlehandedly raising her children.

She dreams of travelling to the Congo to buy fabric to sell in a roadside shop.

Her greatest struggle is getting enough food, and finding a place for all her children to sleep at night, as her landlord confiscated their mattress when she couldn't pay rent.

how vicious. how unnecessary.

the hardest thing, for me, is when people hurt each other. nevermind aids, nevermind hunger, nevermind the LRA. let's talk about families - sister-in-laws running each other off property, and coming to us angry for helping the widow of their late brother. landlords taking mattresses, step mothers burning their step daughters.

i can't get past it. i don't think we realize how much POVERTY does to a person.
