 About Josh:

A little bit about yourself - who you are/where you live/what you do?
This shouldn’t be a hard question to answer, but surprisingly it is. Well I’m originally from Northern California in the Bay Area. Currently I live in Culver City doing sales and graphic design for a janitorial company. Yes, I sell toilet paper. Pretty sexy right?

If you were to describe yourself to someone interested in working with you as a photographer, what would you say?
I’m a fairly laid back photographer. I want whoever I’m shooting to feel comfortable with me. I like to joke around while taking pictures and tend to make a fool of myself for the sake of getting natural, genuine smiles and creating a relaxing environment for the client.

In one sentence, if possible, describe what you hope to accomplish with your photography:
I want to take pictures that I’m excited to take and others are excited to see. I want to tell stories with my photos. I want one of my photos to be able to express 1000 words in a single frame.

What got you interested in photography?
Well my dad was into photography ever since he was in college. When we would go on family vacations I would always end up with his camera in my hands taking pictures. He would teach me some of the basics like composition and proper exposure. But it wasn’t until my first year of college that I decided I wanted to pursue it.

What kind of work have you done thus far?
Portraits, engagements, weddings, behind the scenes for films, artist/band, model/fashion, nature, sports, commercial, product.

How do your personal values influence your photography?
Although I don’t usually like to take photos of people, I do particularly enjoy doing engagement and wedding photography. I grew up seeing the joy my parents have in their own marriage and being able to capture that same joy in other couples is exciting and one of my favorite things to do as a photographer.
What are the most exciting/interesting opportunities it has given you?

The films I’ve done behind the scenes photography for have been really exciting and really fun experiences. It was great having our movie show at a theater during a film festival and seeing my name on the credits. I have to admit, it’s a great feeling.

What kind of work do you like doing best?
I like taking pictures of details. For example, if I’m taking pictures of a bride most of the photos I take aren’t of her face. They are of her earrings, her bouquet, her dress, or her shoes. People are more than just their face. There is so much more to a person than their eyes or their smile although I like taking photos of those too. But I like to show the details of a person’s life that defines who they are.

Do you feel it enables you to see life or people differently - if so, how?
Certainly. Wherever and whenever I am out taking photos I like to look for the details in life that some may either pass by because they don’t notice them or just because they don’t have the time to appreciate them.
